Known as a Blue Ribbon School associated with the No Child Left Behind Act, Barrington High School is a very distinguished and diverse place. In being known as a Blue Ribbon School, Barrington High School is known for both being academically superior and demonstrating dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels. (US Department of Education, 2008) The high school is broken up into a number of ethnicities; 95% being White, 3% are Asian, African Americans make up 1%, and 1% are Hispanic.(National Center on Public Education and Social Policy, 2008) Barrington’s curriculum has successfully met eleven out of eleven targets left by the No Child Left Behind Act. This high school’s student to teacher ratio is 1:12 meaning, there are 85 teachers for 1,059 students. The students at Barrington High School exceeded the state SAT scores in each section: math, verbal, and writing. In math, the district scored 581 compared to the state that scored a 489. In verbal, Barrington scored 556, which was higher than the state that scored a 483. Barrington’s average score in writing was a 589 while Rhode Island held a score of 487. (National Center on Public Education and Social Policy, 2008) The students at Barrington High School also scored above the state average in all aspects of the
state standardize tests.
This school offers a wide variety of sports for both girls and boys including soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross country and indoor/outdoor track, basketball, and hockey too. They also offer girls field hockey, boy’s football, baseball, golf, gymnastics, cheer leading, lacrosse, sailing, swimming, softball and wrestling (“Barrington High School - Home,” 2008). In 2007, they exceeded the state graduation target by 15.9% from 75.3% to 91.2% (National Center on Public Education and Social Policy, 2008). Overall, Barrington High School’s behaviors and attitudes towards drinking and drugs were below what was recorded statewide. Barrington’s health practices also fell a little short. According to the student’s primary care, 82% have it. Barrington Public School’s have policies that support positive health practices and wellness fore teachers as well as providing on-site health and social services. 3% of Barrington students are eligible for the subsidized lunch program and Barrington High has 100% non-recipients for ESL, which is greatly smaller than the state. This school has a 5.3% rate of suspension (incidents per 100 students) while the state has a much greater suspension rate which is 55.8%.(National Center on Public Education and Social Policy, 2008)
